A pediatric ophthalmologist: when do I need an immediate examination?

The parents should pay much attention to their child. If you notice any disorders in your child’s development or behavior – don’t wait to consult a pediatric ophthalmologist. This specialist can confirm or disprove the parents’ fears, determine the core of the problem, identify the disorders at the earliest stage, provide the necessary diagnostics and, if needed, prescribe the appropriate treatment for the eyes of your child.

Symptoms, which should worry the parents:

  • Different diameters of the pupils of the eyes
  • The child does not focus his eyes on the light bulb (on the 1-2nd month of life), on the toy (starting from the 2-3rd month of life) – “floating look”
  • The child has wide pupils that do not narrow in bright light
  • The lack of red-eye in the baby’s photo. If the pupils of the child in the pictures are red – this is normal. But if one or both of the pupils are displayed in white, gray or green – immediately consult a pediatric ophthalmologist!
  • Redness of the eyes or eyelids
  • Lacrimation
  • Twitching eyeballs (eyes “run”)
  • Itching or pain in the eyes
  • Yellowish or greenish discharge from the eyes
  • Photophobia
  • Strabismus
  • Increase or decrease the size of one eye
  • The child squints or has a forced tilt of the head
  • Vision worsening (the child doesn’t see certain objects, and worries/protests when closing one eye)
  • Weakened twilight vision (the child stumbles, has difficulty finding the toys, moves cautiously)
  • Even if none of the symptoms above is present, you shouldn’t neglect visiting the ophthalmologist, because some of the eye diseases have an asymptomatic course, and can only be detected by a good pediatric ophthalmologist. Early diagnostics is very important – the earlier you start the treatment – the better.

Attention! Very often children, even the older ones, have no complaints about the worsened vision. They can hide the fact, that one eye is totally blind, especially if this is a congenital condition (they “have always seen like that”), and the parents don’t notice the problem, because the child sees everything with the other healthy eye.

A pediatric ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats the following eye conditions:

  • stye, halazion, keratitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis and other inflammatory eye diseases
  • injuries and foreign bodies of the eye
  • strabismus and other oculomotor disorders
  • myopia, farsightedness
  • various forms of astigmatism
  • accommodation disturbances
  • various forms of amblyopia
  • pathology of the tear ducts and lacrimal gland
  • allergic eye diseases
  • various pathology of the iris, sclera, lens, retina and optic nerves.

A pediatric ophthalmologist at KinderKlinik: how does the examination proceed?

The doctor assesses the position and movement of the eyes, examines the anterior sections of the eyeball, examines the structure of its internal structures, examines the fundus, and establishes the presence of hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism.

Occasionally the eye symptoms signal about other diseases in the organism, that is why an examination at a pediatric ophthalmologist can help to diagnose such disorders at their earliest stage. This allows to prevent the development of severe genetic, endocrine, kidney etc.)
